Daystar University Faculty in Finland for Two-Week Capacity Building

By Dr. Lydia Radoli

[Nairobi: Sept 1, 2025] Sixteen (16) Daystar University faculty members drawn from different schools, directorates and administrative units of the University are in Finland for two weeks in a crucial capacity building programme on Problem Based Learning  (PBL), and Competency Based Education (CBE).  The programme has been made possible through collaboration with the Jamk University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä Finland.

This is the second phase of immersion in PBL and CBE pedagogies since the launch of the capacity building programme in June this year. The first workshop took place from 4th to 6th August at Daystar University Nairobi Campus, facilitated by Dr. Eila Burns and Hannah Laitinen from Jamk. The third phase will take place physically in Nairobi in October 2025, and virtually in January 2026.

The delegation is led by DVC-FAP Prof. Muturi Wachira and DVC-ARSA Prof. Samuel Muriithi, Chief Finance Officer (CFO) CPA Phyllis Mutua, and coordinated by Rev. Dr. Peter Maurice. Other delegates are Dr. Rogers Gowon Cherui, Dr. Jane Kimathi, Dr. Eunice Wandiga, Dr. Lydia Radoli, Dr. Monicah Opiyo, Ms. Keziah Kahiga, Dr. Martin Munyao, Ms. Mary Asha Mikinyango, Dr. Jared Menecha, Mr. Anthony Wambua, Dr. Laban Chesang and Dr. Gerry Ayieko.

During this period, Daystar faculty in the programme will go through intensive practical models of PBL and CBE drawn from the Finnish education system.  Other content areas include approaches to Artificial Intelligence in PBL and CBE, Digital Learning including use of smart and hybrid classrooms, research-based education, and inclusion accessibility in education, besides others.

In Finland, the Daystar faculty were receive Jamk Vice Rector Dr. Minna Maaria Hiekkataipale, Dr. Laitinen, Dr. Burns, and the Director of Global Education Services Pekka Risku. Key in the training programme also is the opportunity to benchmark with Jamk University’s technological and practical competencies, exhibitions on education, technological solutions for teaching large groups, vocational and special needs teacher education, as well as cultural and faith-based activities.

The programme is designed to build pedagogical capacities and enhance progressive, creative and innovative teaching practices in higher education aligned with Finland’s globally acclaimed education model.

The delegates representing core sections in the University are expected to acquire relevant recognized Trainers (ToTs) around PBL and CBE teaching and to transfer knowledge and skills in their respective departments.

Learning from the Finnish practical oriented model and Kenya’s Competence Based Education (CBE), the capacity building is significant to Daystar University’s commitment and preparedness for shifts in the education system, and alignment to innovative and practical approaches to teaching, learning and research.

Already, the delegates have been given an orientation on Jamk academic programs and their engagement in innovative research on cyber security research and collaboration with Ministry of Defense.

In her address, the Vice Rector Jamk University of Applied Sciences Dr. Minna Maaria Hiekkataipale emphasized  that at Jamk, faculty and the students are at the core of all activities in the University. The University further collaborates with companies and businesses moving from a traditional research University and connecting to the world of work.

Another area of interconnection is the lifelong learning models replacing multiple degrees, with competencies tailor-made courses for a cost-effective way of doing education. Other practical approaches that Daystar University  could benefit from this initiative is enhancement of physical activities, and well-being in academics. The two Universities could explore multi-disciplinary applications, sustainable bio solutions, energy conservation and renewable energy as potential areas for research and innovation.

Jamk programmes range from Information Communication Technologies (ICT), Culture, Business Administration, Natural Resources and the Environment, Tourism and Hospitality, social services and health care, Technology and Transport. The partnership provides an opportunity for future collaborations, faculty and student exchange. This second phase of the capacity building activity set off on 1st September  and will conclude on 12th September 2025.

Dr. Lydia Radoli is the Associate Dean, Daystar University School of Communication.
